Labor

Position

Today our economic health is being challenged by an emboldened labor movement that seems determined to turn back the clock to the 1950s. Many union leaders today want to overregulate the American workplace. They want the authority to force workers to join unions by abolishing private ballots. They want to control the boardrooms of our best companies. And they want to hijack our politics and advance an agenda that includes tax increases, a government takeover of American health care, and closing off our economy to the worldwide market.

The Chamber will oppose any effort to strip away workers' freedom and continue to advance a positive agenda for improving education and training, lowering taxes, opening new export markets, and rebuilding America's infrastructure -- all of which promote job growth. We will continue to fight any agenda of higher taxes and more regulations that will drive jobs away. If today's labor leaders won't represent American workers with the vision and common sense needed to compete and win in the worldwide economy, then the U.S. Chamber will. Here are some of our initiatives to protect workers' freedom:

Protecting the Private Ballot and Preventing Card Check Schemes: Join us as we continue to lead the fight against the unions' campaign to do away with secret ballot union elections and the safeguards they afford to working families and replace it with a system that allows union organizers to harass and intimidate workers into joining a union.

Binding Arbitration Could Force Workers into Underfunded Pensions: If you believe that Congress should not endanger the retirement security of millions of American workers by allowing government arbitrators to force workers into financially unstable or insolvent plans, help us fight the misnamed Employee Free Choice Act.

Workers Denied Right to Participate in Bargaining Process: Add your voice to the Chamber as we fight arbitration requirements that enable the federal government to impose contract terms on private employers -- a move that not only disrupts the careful balance of our labor laws, but also denies workers the ability to vote on their contracts, creates disincentives to compromise, and is likely unconstitutional.

Rhetoric vs. Fact: Help us expose the myths propagated by the so-called "Employee Free Choice Act." It's time to get the facts straight and spread the word.
